I was debating about putting this game on this list because, unlike other entries in the series, The Captive Curse isn’t that overtly scary – and it doesn’t seem to be trying to either: while there are some very dark elements in this game such as kidnappings, monsters and dungeons, there’s also something comedic about it all, particularly with all the teen drama, silly board games, and even a gift shop which sells ‘monster’ merchandise. Thankfully, the game’s other attributes make it worthwhile for a second play. This really contributed to the feeling that anything could happen.Īlthough I found this game more overtly frightening than Curse of Blackmoor Manor, I generally rank it second because this game does rely a lot on novelty to frighten the player: once you know when the hauntings are going to occur – and how they’re being done – this game suddenly doesn’t seem that scary anymore.

Unlike other entries in the series, it’s also very hard to determine what’s causing the haunting until the ‘Yumi’ attacks Nancy and tries to drown her, I had no idea how the suspect was able to do what they were doing.

This game is very clever to not overdo the hauntings so, often when you think one is due to occur, it doesn’t.

I feel like a lot of the thrill of the hauntings in this game though is that they’re very unexpected and unpredictable. Even now, I still get a little scared when I’m locked in the adjoining room and have to complete that puzzle before the ghost appears. I remember playing this game with my friend and screaming when the mirror in the bathroom suddenly smashed. There’s a lot of in-your-face moments – many which have been ranked as some of the most frightening moments in all the series. Curse of Blackmoor Manor manages to combine perfectly the outright frightening moments with the more subtle ones to make for a chilling experience overall.įor first-time players, this game is probably the scariest of the Nancy Drew games. I also find the history – albeit fictional – about the Penvellyn family deeply unsettling I feel the scarier Nancy Drew games (and the ones which I tend to still find somewhat frightening over time) are the ones which hint at darker undertones, rather than expressing them outright. This game doesn’t frighten me anywhere now as it previously did, but I still have to prepare myself when I send Nancy to sleep the dream sequence still disconcerts me if I’m not prepared for it. Before I realised Nancy Drew was not a supernatural game, I also was terrified by the notion that Linda Penvellyn was actually turning into a werewolf. There are other frightening moments in this game though, such as Ether’s random appearances, and the strange oil ceremony in the middle of the night. This was my first Nancy Drew game and I remember being so frightened by the ‘nightmare’ that I actually stopped playing the game until a few months later. I have not revealed the name of any culprits though. (For example, the loud, scary banging noises Nancy hears is due to the culprit stamping on the floor of the room above). Likewise, in applicable cases, I also mention what is the cause of the haunting. I have specifically mentioned examples of ‘scary’ moments in each of the games and when they occur.
